I had this subject during Year 2 in polytechnic. We had 'Draping 1' in the first semester and then 'Draping 2' in the second semester.

DRAPING 1

Since it was the first time we tried draping, we just learned the basics and some experimentations of our own drapes. Our lecturer had us photo document our drapes, submit the drape pieces and the PDF of our photo documentations.

And for the Final Assignment of Draping 1, we had to make a dress. With the guidance of my lecturer, I managed to create a simple dress. The requirements of the dress had to include at least 1 panel, 1 yoke and 2 draping manipulation techniques. I included a princess seam (1 panel), a skirt yoke, gathers on the sleeve cuffs, princess seam, sleeve armhole and a pleated skirt (2 manipulations).

DRAPING 2

Since we had 1-2 months of holiday, we were rusty and some of us might have forgotten the basics of draping 1. So for our first assignment, it was just a brush up on our knowledge of the basic draping techniques. We had to create a dress toilé that included the use of 2 draping manipulation techniques with panels.

For the second assignment, our lecturer taught us a unique draping technique called 'Subtraction Cutting'. We had to use that technique and create 5 different garments. The options were dress, top, skirt, pants and sleeves. Additionally, we had to photo document our process and step-by-step instructions.

For the Final Assignment, we had to create an evening gown with a theme. My chosen theme was mushrooms, specifically Ear mushrooms. We had to include our research on chosen theme, mood boards, minimum of 50 gown sketches in our sketchbooks for submission. Our requirements for the gown must include a bustier.

These are my photo documentation of my evening gown toilé. I had a base bustier top and layered sheer tulle over. The skirt was muslin and tagged at various marked points.

This is the final look of my evening gown. The skirt of the gown was of pink shantung, the top consists of two different shades of pink tulle and the base of the bustier was nude cotton. The gown is has a clean finish on the bustier top and an inner skirt lining. The opening of the gown is at the centre back using hook and eye.
